PREFACE

The objective of this book is to present the reader with the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of periodontal disease. The graphic design is aimed at offering a form which is both attractive and easy to understand, providing the reader with three different ways to read the book. The most immediate involves thumbing through the pages and simply looking at the photographs and drawings whose clarity and layout are sufficient to provide an initial understanding of the techniques and cases presented.

Further and more exhaustive details can be obtained by reading the captions and using them to reinterpret the images and graphics. Finally, complete study of the text will provide the interested reader with a complete and indepth picture of the periodontal panorama.

One of my 'master', the distingueshed John F. Pritchard, used to say: 'Opinions without evidence are like a gallery without works of art'. I have therefore tried to avoid setting out my opinions in this books, unless backed by the evidence of scientific research. However, this book is also based on thirty years of practice, study and personal observations, including the last twenty years dedicated to periodontology.
